In women, the muscles around the lips are closer to the middle layer of the skin, causing deep traction which results in deeper wrinkles, according to the results of a study published in the journal Aesthetic Surgery.

"The aim of this study is to get new insights into the perception that wrinkles in early wanit appear more severe than men," said researcher Emma C. Paes, MD, of the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
