Pigment Disorders Cause Skin Changes Color

According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), pigments are the dyes of the human body, animals, and plants. Various colors of human skin are influenced by the body's pigment substances called melanin. If melanin in the body is too much, then the body color will darken. Vice versa, if the body produces a little melanin then the skin color becomes brighter.

Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. When melanocytes are damaged or unhealthy, melanin production can be disrupted. The result, skin color is also affected alias pigmentation disorder. There are some pigmentation disorders that affect only a small part of the skin area. However, there is also a pigment disorder that attacks the whole body. Here are some pigment disorders you can experience.

Melasma

Melasma is a skin problem in which black spots appear on the skin of the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, neck, and hands. In addition, melasma can also appear in areas of the body that are often exposed to sunlight. Melasma is more common in women, but men can also be affected by this pigment disorder condition. If it happens to a pregnant woman, melisma is also called chloasma. Chloasma can disappear by itself after the pregnancy is complete or it can also be treated with skin cream.

If you suffer from melasma, it is recommended that the skin not be too frequent or too long exposed to sunlight, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at any time, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and go to a dermatologist.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color resulting in white patches on the skin. Vitiligo occurs because of reduced melanin locally only in certain skin areas. Typically, color changes appear first in areas exposed to sunlight such as hands, arms, legs, face and lips.

Signs of this pigment disease include the appearance of gray hairs, eyelashes, eyebrows or beards before the age of 35 years, change or loss of color on the retina (inner lining of the eyeball) and tissue lining the inside of the mouth and nose (mucous membranes ), and the appearance of white patches around the armpit, navel, genitals, and rectum.

Albinism

Albinism is a genetic disorder caused by gene mutations that cause malfunctioning of cells that produce melanin well. This genetic mutation makes the skin, hair, or eyes on albinism become colorless and cause eye problems. Albinism can not be treated, therefore, people with this pigment disorder should use sunscreen at any time. Because without melanin, skin albinisme sufferers are more at risk of damage due to sunlight or even skin cancer.

So it turns out the skin is not less precious with other organs. Caring for the skin is strongly recommended to keep your health healthy. If on your skin suddenly appear black or white patches, it is advisable to contact a dermatologist immediately to get proper and further treatment. Because who knows, it is a pigment disorder.
